Storybook Style - A Whimsical Estate in Yuma, AZ

The winter edition of Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine features one of the most “magical” houses we’ve ever designed. Homeowner Jane recalls, “When we were planning this house, I knew there needed to be a surprise around every corner. A home should exude happiness—and I wanted to look up and down and see something new all the time.”

“When Jane and her husband Troy, a produce farmer, decided to build their house on a piece of land in the middle of their Yuma farm field, her fictitious mouse friend Philoneous was part of the design inspiration, helped along by Jane’s artistic talents. The resulting 14,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home resembles a gracious Italian villa, surrounded by lush gardens. Inside, the warm and cozy interior is filled with Jane’s artwork and frescoes, plus rich millwork that displays collections of everything from religious iconography to ceramics. There’s also a sumptuous built-in mouse house for Philoneous, pictured below.

Remodel in Phoenix Home & Garden's "Smaller Spaces" Issue

On stands now, Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine’s August issue features “Smaller Spaces: Making Every Square Foot Count”. Our featured PV home is only 2,410 sq. feet and was remodeled and reimagined inside and out by Mark Candelaria and Tim Mathewson into a floor plan that really opened up the cramped, outdated design and mixed timeless elements with organic materials.

"Over the Top Outdoor Spaces" in Scottsdale Lifestyle Magazine June, 2020

Take a look at this epic 20,000+ square foot home featuring a resort-style pool, European fountains and a giant moat in the middle of the desert in the current print and online issue of Scottsdale Lifestyle Magazine here.

This Silverleaf estate was created for a couple who were concerned about their cats escaping and local wildlife entering. During a meeting to discuss options, Candelaria proposed a moat. This moat extends the entire backyard at different levels. The negative edge pool is at house level and spills into the moat three feet down. The moat wall then descends another six feet into the desert and is six feet wide. The moat acts as an organic element amidst a formal setting, as it meanders along the desert.

"Building and designing a home is a very personal experience. Our clients become friends with the iron guy, the stucco guy -- your house is special and you want the people working on it to feel it is special as well. It's that synergistic effort -- the workers in turn will help you if something goes wrong because they are part of the family. Especially with what is going on in the world right now, we really appreciate our homes that much more."

This estate was a collaborative effort with Landscape Architect Jeff Berghoff and Builder Schultz Development Corporation.
