On the Road to Laguardia and the Basque Wine Country

We had a fantastic time in San Sebastián – its pretty hard not to!

So now it was time to head to the country just like we do on our Italy tours. Of course most tours would charter a bus but I have found that my travelers love having their own cars and the freedom and privacy it affords them, especially in the country. So we did board several vans at the Hotel Londres for the San Sebastián airport and Europcar where we rented our sedans. Each couple has their own car and we get our convoy in order and head out for the Basque Wine country.

First, I cannot tell you how nice the roads and highways are in Spain! Impeccable! Wider than Italy, well marked, and not one pothole this entire trip. Yes there are tolls along the way, but I would say well worth the price.

The road trip from San Sebastián to the Basque Wine country starts with lush greenery brought to life from the sea. As you rise in elevation the trees transition to pines and if I just woke up from a nap you would swear you were on I-90 driving through western Montana. Absolutely beautiful.

Once you cross the divide the mountains act as a dam for the sea moisture just like the Sierra Nevada do in California and then the air dries and the greenery slowly diminishes to what then looks like the landscape around Cordes Junction which also has now a number of wineries. Rolling hills line with vineyards all embraced by lovely mountain ranges.

We drive up and down the hills and slowly make our way to our next venue, Laguardia. Laguardia is one of many little walled, medieval, hilltop villages that time has forgotten. Of course we were arriving on a Saturday and let’s just say the tourists as well as the locals have not forgotten this town – it was packed. No place to park so we just had to wait our turns for stalls to open in the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. With the cars parked we needed to schlep our bags up the hill, through the walled entrance, and through the narrow streets to our hotel, the Hospederia de Los Parajes.

What a lovely spot right in the middle of the village and a very cool mix of the old with the modern. We got settled in and then all made our way outside to explore the village, grab some lunch and then a nice siesta….yes we were all unknowingly embracing the life of a Spaniard!

Well, one true trait of Spanish culture is the fact that dinner does not start until 9 pm. Usually, Isabel and I are just wrapping up for the evening as we both like to get up at 4am. But not here in Spain. Our first dinner in the country was a welcome dinner hosted by Candelaria Design right here in the hotel and starting at 9pm and finishing sometime around midnight! Fabulous way to start our time in the country and the food was fantastic.

The evening finished with a walk around the village perimeter and then down the narrow streets with a nightcap and a cigar and stories shared by all of our journey to the Basque Wine Country.

San Sebastian Day 4 - Fine Dining at Akelare'

On Day 4 we all got a chance to enjoy San Sebastián but it would be our last full day here.

I started the day with a nice walk with my good friend Larry Peery who along with his lovely partner, Gloria Ipock, were joining us on their second trip together and Larry’s third trip with me. Larry and I met in 1983 when we collaborated on back in 1983 with him as the builder and me as architect. Some 34 years later we are still the best of friends. What an absolute pleasure it is to have this time together and enjoy some good chats, some wonderful meals and of course a cigar or two along the way.

We enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and some pastries and then made our way back to the hotel to rendezvous with our ladies for a day of sightseeing and shopping. The girls shopped and had a total blast and I enjoyed the architecture.

We stopped for a nice glass of wine and some spritzes and just enjoyed Spain passing by. So nice to just take some time with no rush and just daydream, laugh and chat with two of my most repeat travelers!!! Boy have the four of us had fun over the years and how our lives have changed and transitioned since our first trip together which was in 2012. On that trip to Italy I was still going through my divorce, Isabel was on her first trip with me, and Rebecca had just separated from her husband. Now Isabel and I are happily married, and Rebecca is happily remarried, and Gicela is still just plain happy – as always! I wonder where we will all be five years from now…..?

To finish our time in San Sebastián a group of us booked dinner at the 3 star Michelin restaurant, Akelarre just outside of San Sebastián. https://www.akelarre.net/en/akelarre

Ok first – the architecture and setting are beyond words so even if the food was average I would have been thrilled but then the food comes over a 16 courses and four hours and satisfied is a mere understatement. This is beyond spectacular.

Here was the Menu:

Prawns and Green Beans cooked in “Orujo” Flame and sea roes

Chickpeas and Violet Potato, not Conventional at all

Sourced kokotxa, white Garlic Pil-Pil

Hake in Seaweed stem, Piancton and Oyster Leaf

Squid as a Risotto, Butter Flower

Grilled Lamb Loin. Salad in Skein. Mushrooms and Sweetbreads

Melting Cupcake

A Different Apple Tart

Add a spectacular sunset, fine wine, and of course our wonderful group of travelers and all the ingredients were in place for one of the most memorable dinners of my life.

San Sebastian - Cooking in the Basque Country

With our first two days completed comprised mostly of travel and one fun evening here in San Sebastián it was now time for our first full day in this marvelous country. And of course there is only one way to get into the culture and style of this Basque region than through cooking! Our first full day would start at the Mimo San Sebastián School of Cooking and a 4 hour cooking class followed by dinner paired with Basque wines from the region. Nothing like starting this at 10 am!!! http://sansebastian.mimofood.com/en

We started the day waking up to a beautiful moon set on one horizon and a lovely sun rise on the other. We grabbed a quick breakfast at the hotel and then a nice ten minute walk through San Sebastián to the Hotel Maria Cristina where we enjoyed a quick café con leche and water and then it was time to get the aprons on and get down to business!

I love to cook as you all know. Architecture is a slow process many times taking years while a meal can be prepared and enjoyed in a few hours! So many similarities between the two however, from planning, executing, key ingredients, composition and patience.

Our menu today consisted of delicious langostinos, seared steaks, peppers and sausages with tortillas, and a sous vide hake. All fabulous. I highly recommend the Mimi School of Cooking as a way to appreciate the culture of the Basque region. This is gourmet cooking at its best and what is wonderful is how fun they make the experience. Definitely nothing to be intimidated about. They explained the techniques, science, and traditions of this amazing cuisine which only made our subsequent meals so much more meaningful.

With our cooking class completed we were all free to enjoy the day as we chose. Some (actually most) of us went back for siestas – a well practiced tradition here in Spain! What was crazy was when we laid down for our hiatus it was sunny no 85º and when we woke up from our three hour rest it was cold, cloudy and ready to rain! I thought maybe I had slept through the entire day. But that’s how fast the weather can change here on the north coast of Spain!

With a little catch up on the rest we did a little shopping and time to take in some of the fabulous architecture and then of course it was tapas time again! Nothing quite like the roasted beef cheek on mashed potatoes or the duck foie gras served with white chocolate foam and vanilla toasts! Heaven. Our final two travelers arrived after their two day excursion and then the party was really on. Our Candelaria Design Tour Spain was fully underway!

Hola from Espana 2017

We are off to Spain on our first Candelaria Design Tour Spain! We are having a fantastic time and I am writing this blog from Laguardia, Spain and the Hotel de los Parajes. http://www.hospederiadelosparajes.com/en/index.html  in the Basque Wine Country.

This is our 15th Candelaria Design Tour with of course 14 of them being in Italy but our repeat travelers were ready for something new and Spain is one of my favorite countries and this tour is totally reconfirming this! Eight of my 13 travelers are repeat travelers with three of my travelers having joined me on over six trips.

We started this year’s tour of Spain in the absolutely spectacular city of San Sebastian’ on the north coast of Spain in the heart of the Basque Country. This is one of my favorite cities in the world and has more restaurants per capita than any city in the world including a number of three star Michelin restaurants. If you are a foodie then this is your heaven on this earth.

Our journey began in Phoenix and we flew through London then a stop in Madrid and then our final destination, San Sebastian. All in all some 22 hours of traveling having left Phoenix at 2:30 pm local time on Tuesday and arriving in San Sebastian on Wednesday at 5pm local time (8am in Phoenix). Of course, with a couple tight connections due to flight delays our bags didn’t quite keep pace with us so our trip from the airport to our hotel was nice and light! We were fortunate to rendezvous with two of our travelers who came early and had just arrived from France. Another traveler came by train from Madrid and my two other travelers from Atlanta had their flight canceled in Atlanta and so they had an extra day of travel thrown onto their itinerary!

From the airport to the hotel was about a 30-minute ride that just gets more and more beautiful as we make our way towards the city center and our arrival at the Hotel Londres! https://www.hlondres.com/es/ I love this hotel and stayed here with the family over the Holidays on our scouting trip. Located in the heart of the city, the hotel is situated along the beach of the La Concha Bay with stellar views from all of our rooms of the beach and city. The weather was perfect and after getting settled and freshened up, it was time to go and get some tapas/pinchos!

The tapas/pinchos experience in Spain is unique and never the same in the States. First of all, with all of our codes and health requirements you can’t just have tapas sitting on an open platter for everyone to grab. With a glass screen guard separating you it loses its magic! Not here – grab a plate and start making your selections. Take your plate to the bartender, grab a glass of vino tinto or a cerveza and close out your tab and enjoy. Try a few in one place and move onto the next…..talking, laughing and never really ever filling up!

Dinnertime in Spain is late and we got started about 9pm which after flying for 22 hours seemed impossible, but the adrenaline kicks in and off you go with new life and energy fueled further by the fantastic nourishment from the fresh and un-doctored food and wine from Spain!

After several hours of tapas hopping we finished in style by eating fresh cheesecake on the street with red wine! Our trip to food heaven had begun!

Summer is Here - We are off to Spain!

Welcome to Summer…. Yes those 100º plus days are here!

In fact, in just 2 days we are off on our first Candelaria Design Tour Spain! We have 13 travelers going on what I know is going to be a spectacular trip. From the wildly creative architecture of Antonio Gaudi to the equally out of the box work of Frank Gehry, my travelers are going to see some amazing architecture and experience some fabulous Spanish wine and cuisine. You can follow our tour right here on our blog and on our Candelaria Design Tours Page on Facebook and Instagram. https://www.facebook.com/CandelariaDesign.ItalyTrips/?ref=bookmarks

We do have a number of spots still open for our September Candelaria Design Tour Italy Tour departing September 20th and finishing in Venice on October 4th! This will be a fantastic tour – our 15th – and we already have a wonderful group going so don’t wait to join us on this year’s tour!

Last weekend Isabel and I enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Mii Amo Spa at the Enchantment Resort in Sedona that I designed with my mentor and former partner, the late, George W. Christensen. I have not spent a night here since 1987 some thirty years ago. I am not sure what I have been waiting for! I love this place and especially the spa. We did not design the spa but I wish I did – it is fabulous. I have been to many spas across the world and this definitely ranks as one of the best I have ever experienced. What fun to stay here and relive so many memories of the creation of this place which you can read in my blog about Enchantment -

Isabel and I enjoyed two days here after our Friday/Saturday trip to Flagstaff to check on two of our projects in Pine Canyon, and a potential new one in Forest Highlands! I love it up here and it’s so nice for this Durango, Colorado boy to be doing some more mountain work!

Just before our trip to Flagstaff we were in New York for the Premiere of our friend Ryan Serhant’s show Million Dollar Listings, NYC! We were proud to be a sponsor so graciously set up by our good friend Margurite Brown who also appointed me to a panel with Caesarstone at the Hearst Publications Tower where we spoke about the trends in Kitchen design. What an honor to be a part of this panel with designers from across the world. I will write a separate blog about the trends that were identified by the panel which I know you will find interesting.

The day before our trip to New York, Isabel and I made paella for the highest bidder of one of our catered dinners in her home on behalf of PANDA which we are big supporters of -

http://www.azpanda.org

Well the winner happened to be our client Sue Ross who won the same dinner a year ago. We had so much fun last year that she made sure she won it again this year. What wonderful guests, one of my client’s and former editor for Food and Wine Magazine in NY, Susy Davidson and her husband Bill Entringer, whose home I remodeled in Troon and their friend, Barbara Fenzl, who is the head of the Les Gourmettes Cooking School. Ok no pressure. Well we nailed it including a new limoncello pie I made that morning at 3am. It turned out great and I will share the recipe because it is a good one for summer.

Ok that was last week….. this week after our return home from Sedona Isabel and I appeared on Sonoran Living on Arizona ABC 15 compliments of our good friend, David Neshibori, of AZADI Fine Rugs. Love seeing our Candelaria Design project on their banner page! http://hello.azadifinerugs.com/?gclid=CjwKEAjw387JBRDPtJePvOej8kASJADkV9TLgABSllMneGlWGgTDN2W0ygIhUzib7FDMjBOMgx7gOxoCN2zw_wcB

In our three minute spot we spoke about de-browning homes and a recent home where we did a de-brown makeover! Fun time and wonderful exposure – thanks again David!

Then it was off to Lake Tahoe with good friend, Frank DeBlasi Wealth Manager for US Bank, where I visited Martis Camp and met with the sales team to get some Candelaria Design projects going there with a focus on the remodel and renovation market which is growing incredibly now that the project is nearly built out. Yes, Martis Camp needs to be de-browned too! We had a great trip and met many interesting people. What a beautiful development and area and if you get a chance to consider the perfect spot for a second mountain home, Martis Camp would be one of my first choices.               http://www.martiscamp.com

So, in the midst of all these travels we do have a couple announcements. First, we announced our Candelaria Design MVP for 2017 chosen by the Candelaria Design staff themselves. This year’s winner is Meredith Thomson!!!! I am so proud to announce this as Meredith is a rock star. I will be writing a blog just about her, her career, and her time here at Candelaria Design. We are very fortunate to have her as a part of our team.

Then to just add to our rock stars of women at CDA, Vivian Ayala officially purchased her first shares of Candelaria Design and is now officially a Principal and Partner of Candelaria Design. Vivian has been with me over 18 years and is so deserving of this partnership promotion and opportunity. I’m not retiring – yet! I still have a 6th grader so I have a way to go but it is nice to have this all in place with our new operating agreement that allows not only Vivian, but others, to take ownership of the firm when I am ready to slow down!

Finally, we do say goodbye to Rob Banach who joined us about five years ago. Rob will be missed for sure and we wish him and his lovely family all the best!

Well more to come along with some wonderful recipes and of course our Spain trip in the days and weeks ahead so stay tuned. Where is everyone off to for the summer???? Thanks for reading and viewing our Candelaria Design Blog!

We did enjoy watching the premiere at a Candelaria Design remodel we did with the HGTV Smart Home 2017 builder, Jim Audiss of Eagle Luxury Properties, http://eagleluxuryproperties.com and realtor, Chris Karas of the Karas Group. http://www.thekarasgroup.com . I whipped up some paella for our guests and we had a fantastic evening!

This weekend we attended the big Prom Gala in support of Gigi’s Playhouse at Wingate Ranch in Scottsdale! Isabel and I were honorary chairs and received a Leadership Award which was a real honor for sure. We are so proud to be a part of this organization and have been a part of the design and creation of Gigi’s Playhouse. Orchestrated and created by our good friend and client, Jennifer Gage, Gigi’s Playhouse is a one-of-a-kind achievement center for individuals with down syndrome and their families providing therapeutic and educational programs right here in Scottsdale, AZ. We donated a paella dinner for a party of eight which went for $1400 and we decided to make it two dinners so the $1300 bidder also stepped up for a dinner for eight so we were able to raise $2700 for our paella donation! Overall the evening I believe was a complete success. You can still make donations to this fabulous organization at https://gigisplayhouse.org/ways-give

The Gala was Friday night and Isabel and I returned from Highpoint Friday morning so it was a long 25 hour day of travel and gala…ing – but definitely worth it. Highpoint and the Spring Market was fabulous this year. I love accompanying Isabel as she now searches for amazing treasures for her clients, and I get to visit with my friends from The Design Network who carry our show SKETCH! We are underway on production of Season 3 and we look forward to its release in 2017. https://www.thedesignnetwork.com/series/sketch/

Plenty of new trends at the Market with the biggest being the swivel chair. Yes the swivel chair…! I cannot tell you how many showroom guides talked about it and how popular they are. Why – the advent and popularity of the Great Room and the need to swivel between the TV, guests, and the Kitchen area. Totally makes sense, and I tried several of them and for someone who can’t sit still for more than a few seconds, I have to say I was sold! Besides swivel chairs that rotate they have swivel rockers. Overall, the weather was horrible, with rain virtually every day. But the Market seemed well attended.

From Highpoint we drove from central North Carolina to the west tip of South Carolina to visit my good friend, builder, and one of my first clients, Larry Peery, and his lovely partner, Gloria Ipock. They have a beautiful home on Lake Keowee and it was great to relive some of our stories and projects including the Enchantment Resort he built when at the Phil W. Morris Company and I was at Christensen-Miller Associates. Larry and Gloria are joining us on our Candelaria Design Tour Spain 2017 after having been on the 2012 trip and the 2004 trips.

Now let’s throw a wedding in a couple weekends ago as our Tim Mathewson married his fiance’ Amber at the Candelaria Design El Chorro on April 1st. We have been first 6 out of 7 of the last years and this made it two in a row again! Please vote for us in 2017! http://azbigmedia.com/vote-ranking-arizona

In the midst of all this, Isabel and I snuck off to Oregon, for a little wine exploration and a nice little romantic getaway. While there, I was blessed to reconnect with my classmate from elementary and junior high school from back in Northglenn, CO, Steve Hammond. Steve and I were always the two best artists in school and we had reconnected on Facebook but not since 1974 had we seen each other. We had a fantastic dinner with our wives, Isabel and Laura, in Portland at Nostrana which was fabulous if you are ever in Portland. http://nostrana.com  Of course I ended up in architecture and Steve is a principal of an amazing advertising and graphics art company, H2RAgency in Oregon. http://h2ragency.com His work is fantastic and get ready for some collaborations in the future now that we have reunited. Oregon is of course, beautiful, and Isabel and I had a fun time in Portland, then exploring the wine country, doing some antiquing and sourcing at the Aurora Mills Architectural Salvage and enjoying some quiet time along the Oregon coastline. http://auroramills.com

Marching through March

MC with Laurie and Jon Hunter - Getting ready for Fight Night

MC with Laurie and Jon Hunter - Getting ready for Fight Night

What a busy March! Wow – I love it.

Thanks to all of those who made it out to watch my third performance of the National Anthem at the Giants/Indians game at Scottsdale Stadium. Nothing like having the mic go out on you during the first stanza but having the entire crowd rise up and sing along – a very special moment for sure.

So as always, we are busy not only with our clients and projects but with our community projects and events. I want to send a shout out and a congratulations to two of my good friends, Jerry Meek of Desert Star Construction and fellow ARA architect, Brent Kendle, both who were inducted into the Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine Master’s of the Southwest class of 2017 this month. I am proud to have them join me as I was inducted in 2005 and it is a real honor to be a part of this elite class of Masters of the Southwest!

Now looking ahead, we have some marvelous community service projects we are involved in. On March 31st we will be hosting a table at the Ryan’s House Breakfast at the Arizona Biltmore. We are currently working with Taylor More in adding a Candelaria Design Storage Room to their beautiful facility located in Central Phoenix. They currently have to use one of their bedrooms for storage – a room that could be used for one of the many children and families who could use this space. Their waiting list is long and this storage room addition will make a big difference. Stay tuned for more on how we can get this done!

We need to make this a bedroom again - and build Ryan House a new Storage Room!

Celebrating 35 Years in Architecture

Celebrating 35 years in Architecture!

Celebrating 35 years in Architecture!

Happy Saturday everyone!

A couple quick reminders. First, don’t forget to catch my singing of the National Anthem this coming Monday, March 6th at 1pm at Scottsdale Giants Stadium in Old Town. http://charros.com/spring-training-baseball/ I’m looking forward to singing for the third time. I am really looking forward to this third time as the butterflys are a lot less! Let me know if you need any ticketsto the Scottsdale Charro Lodge for any of the games!

Ok today is a very special day for me! 35 years ago, on March 4th, 1982 I started my first day of my career in architecture! We had a fun little celebration yesterday morning and I want to thank all of those who stopped by out of their busy days for a bite from our omelet bar accompanied by a Bloody Mary or mimosa!

So 35 years….I remember that first day like it was yesterday. I was 21 years old and had been working at Schuff Steel as a steel detailer drafting billboards. In fact, I did detail the largest billboard in the country at Anaheim Stadium in California. But my billboard detailing career was short lived as they put a moratorium on billboards and I was out of a job in the middle of the 1982 recession. So I was on the streets, recently married, trying to get enough funds to get back to architecture school at ASU. Things weren’t looking too go until I saw an ad in the paper for a draftsman position at the firm of George W. Christensen and Associates.

My mentor, the late George W. Christensen, and I at our Enchantment Resort circa 1987

I found my way to the old Lon Megargeehttp://www.a-1beerprints.com/HTML/Lon%20Megargee.html

designed office on the southwest corner of 24th Street and Campbell where George Christensen and his crew had their offices. I really wanted this job as George was an associate professor at the school of architecture at ASU and so I knew this was the key to my future and a job I just had to get at all cost. I didn’t have much of a portfolio (other than billboards which I didn’t think was going to make a big impact) so as soon as the time and date of my interview was set I ran home and starting creating drawings from my architecture drafting books. I really didn’t know what I was drawing but I can tell you the drawings were well executed.

I got up early that big day and was greeted by Dianne Kleber who was running the front desk (running the office!) and she brought me into the conference room which is still one of my favorite spaces. What was a livingand dining room with a beautiful plaster fireplace with of course a Lon Megargee painting above. Of course at that time I had no idea what I was doing or who Lon Magargee was but here I was sitting in front of these serious architects. I was 21, hair down to my shoulders, and hoping this would be my big break. I went through my drawings and then it came down to the question of what did I want to be paid? Luckily, I was really hungry and wanted this job, so I countered with, “Look, this is the place I want to be. I can draw anything and love working so I would be happy to come here, do whatever you need me to do or draw and I will gladly take whatever you want to pay me for the work!”

MC with the lovely Dianne Kleber at our 35 year celebration party!

The interview went well I thought and I followed up with a nicely written letter and I then waited by the phone – no email in those days! A week or so went by and then I got that call that changed my life forever. Dianne Kleber called and said well Markle Sparkle you got the job. When can you start….of course I said I can be right over! How special it was yesterday to have Dianne Kleber at our little celebration! What a special lady she is! We worked together at Christensen’s office and then she worked with my at my firm, Candelaria Design Associates for several years! I have been so blessed to have this lady in my life!

MC and Brian Cassidy, 2016

MC and Brian Cassidy, 2016

That first day was very memorable also. I was the last desk on the row of drafting tables in the studio. Dick Miller, Verner Wulf, John Williams, Brain Cassidy and then me – the new kid in the studio. First task was to set up my drafting table. I had no idea how to set up my mayline (rolling straight edge) and fiddled with it for a while when Brain turned to me and said, “let me help you Junior!” That nickname stuck for a number of years! Brian got me all set up and between him and Dick Miller, who ran the production of the office, they mentored me along and were instrumental in my development of becoming an architect.

Some of my first projects was the Van Houten Residence in Paradise Valley with Gerald and Jerry Meek of Desert Star Construction. http://desertstarconstruction.com and the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church sanctuary on Lincoln and then the Casa Blanca Phase 2 Patio Homes in 1984 which I was now the project manager and in charge of putting that project together. Then throw in the Enchantment Resort in Sedona where I was the project manager and the Castle Hot Springs project. My career was off and running.

Well after 5 years I had moved up from “Junior” who was willing to work for anything to becoming George Christensen’s partner and the formation of CCBG which still exists today. During those years, I never made it back to ASU for architecture but at the savvy recommendation of George, I did go to the College of Business where I studied accounting, finance, business law and of course my favorite, marketing! I also then had the time under my belt to qualify to take the architecture registration exams which I did and received my license in 1992. So this September will mark 25 years as a registered architect.  Add another twelve years and George was ready to retire and so it was my time to head out on my own and form Candelaria Design in August of 1999.

So now some 35 years and some 100,800 hours later I have designed well over 1000 homes all across the country, Mexico and Canada. We are celebrating our 18th year of Candelaria Design and I am proud to have a team who was there at the beginning, namely my associate, Vivian Ayala, 16 years and Jeffrey Kramer, AIA some 17 years.

As we all know, nobody does everything on their own and I have been blessed to work with so many talented architects, amazing clients, and phenomenal builders and craftsman who have been so instrumental in bringing these inspirations and visions to reality. I was always fortunate to have designing and drawings as part of my soul and makeup and to see where it has taken me is beyond my wildest imagination. I had no idea when I wandered into that office on 24th Street where the journey would lead me. However, to remind me of that start at the old 24th Street Office, I did find a Lon Megargee print of the A-1 Beer painting the "Cowboy's Dream" that hangs in my home studio. George loved that print and so do I!

The 2016 Class of Candelaria Design

The 2016 Class of Candelaria Design

Thank you to everyone who has been and continues to be a part of my journey, which despite the rumors, I have not retired and continue to work some 70 hours every week. I’m usually up at 4am drawing away, which I love more than anything, and then in meetings or out at jobsites during the day, and then cooking away for clients, friends, and family with my lovely bride, Isabel in the evening! Squeeze in our tours to Italy and now Spain and I can assure you I am far from retiring! Candelaria Design is doing great and we have put into place a wonderful way to keep it going for years and years with our buy-sell agreement which allows all of our Candelaria Design lifers to be a part of the ownership!

Here is to the next 1000 homes! Ok back to the boards I go!

Spring Training Time Is Here!

We are into the heart of the winter season! Spring Training is off and running and the streets and restaurants are filled!

Ok don’t forget to get your tickets for my singing of the National Anthem at Scottsdale Giants Stadium at 1pm March 6th http://charros.com/spring-training-baseball/ I’m looking forward to singing for the third time. The first time I sang in opera style, the second time I went country, and this time I’m going to give it another spin and style! Let me know if you need any tickets to the Scottsdale Charro Lodge for any of the games! Thanks again to Telluride Natural Stone for having built our Lodge and assembling and disassembling the Lodge every year!!!

Last Wednesday I was honored to be part of a panel of design, real estate, and construction experts as we spoke on the means and methods for modernizing old world homes. We had an amazing turn out and some interesting statistics were noted by realtor Thomas O’Leary. The Phoenix/Scottsdale market is really undervalued and the number of homes/properties that are in need of remodeling or freshening up is enormous. As we said in our last blog we love remodel / addition projects and we have some amazing projects going.

Then last Thursday we had our September 2016 Tour Italy Post Trip Dinner at the Candelaria Design~IMI Design~Cullum Homes Village of Mountain Shadows. We had a such a great time reuniting with nearly all of our travelers! Seriously, these trips just get better and better and we are exciting to be adding our first Spain trip this coming June and our 15th Tour Italy this coming September finishing in Venice. We do have room for one couple and/or a single for the Spain trip and we have room for two couples for the September Italy trip! http://www.candelariadesign.com/tours

So we do squeeze in some architecture! Here is a peek of what Candelaria Design has under construction!!!

From traditional to contemporary, from Scottsdale to Montauk, Long Island, we have some very cool new builds and remodels underway! Right here in Scottsdale/Phoenix we have some very interesting projects underway. Probably one of our most unique and extreme projects going is the home we have under construction on the south slope of Camelback Mountain! This home is being built by BedBrock Developers http://www.bedbrock.com with the interiors by EST EST http://www.estestinc.com . This home is truly an engineering feat given the home is sighted on a 73% slope. Because Phoenix will only allow a 20% slope driveay the only way we could get to the pad site was to make half of the road a tunnel in order to get more length and height.  Our Candelaria Design Project Architect, Meredith Thomson, has been leading the way in getting this home out of the ground (rock)! If you drive down Camelback Road and look north you can’t help but see it emerging on the mountain.

We have also moved to Phase 2 of our Ranch compound project near Fountain Hills. Fellow Principal, Vivian Ayala and I have been working away on this project for some time. We have completed the horse arena and the connected barn is nearing completion. Next we connect all of this to the main residence which Schultz Development http://www.schultzdevelopment.org  broke ground on last week.  The main house will then connect to a guest house, which will connect to an indoor pool, 2 lane bowling alley, indoor pistol range, indoor racquetball court, and indoor gym. Oh, and don’t forget the indoor telescope observatory! Interiors are being done my wife, Isabel, and her crew at Earth and Images http://www.earthandimages.com

Our Village at Mountain Shadows Project is still moving as we have now seen more than half of the available 40 units sold. The development and construction is being orchestrated by Cullum Homes http://cullumhomes.com with interiors by Anita Lange of IMI Design Studio http://imidesignstudio.com Fellow Principal, Vivian Ayala and I have designed 5 models but nearly every sale has customized the plans to their needs and so this has turned out to be so fun and we have enjoyed meeting all of the new residents. Last night the Cullums threw an amazing party celebrating the new beginnings at Mountain Shadows where the new hotel will be opening soon! The 7C’s – caviar, champagne, couture, cars, cigars and car bars! What a great time and what a wonderful project.

We have broken ground on a beautiful mountain home up in the Flagstaff Area of Pine Canyon. The home is being built by Schultz Development with interiors by Kati McPherson of KAM Interiors https://www.facebook.com/kaminteriorsinc/?rc=p This is our second home in Pine Canyon and is being quarterbacked by our Project Director, Rob Banach! This will be a beautiful two story mountain lodge with stellar views of the award winning golf course and the San Francisco Peaks of Flagstaff.

Ok that is definitely just a peek of what we have under construction. That doesn’t even scratch the surface of what we have under construction not to mention what is on the boards! Stay tuned for more in the weeks ahead and I’ll be adding some more recipes soon too!

February and its Time to Remodel!

Ok so we are nearly halfway through February – wow the time is flying! I don’t know about you but January flew by and February is shorter and will go faster I’m sure.

This morning I am heading to Old Town Scottsdale to ride in the Parada del Sol Parade along with my fellow Scottsdale Charros. Come on down and support us and enjoy the parade and fantastic weather.

Ok don’t forget to get your tickets for my singing of the National Anthem at Scottsdale Giants Stadium at 1pm March 6th http://charros.com/spring-training-baseball/

This afternoon we will stop by and celebrate the two year anniversary of Gigi’s Playhouse and the kickoff of Gigi’s Café and University. Candelaria Design is proud to have offered our services to design the Playhouse and now the Café and University. https://gigisplayhouse.org/phoenix/events/

It is definitely getting busier out there and has been gaining momentum for some time. The Phoenix Business Journal in their November 30th issue noted that according to Realtor.Com Phoenix, and it’s metro area, will be the fastest growing housing market in the country in 2017 and we believe it.

We love doing these projects although they require a totally different skill set from designing a ground up home. First and foremost is the ability to work with what is there and figure out what how walls are being supported, mechanical systems are being run and then understanding zoning and neighborhood restrictions and codes. Developing a budget for these projects is also a lot more challenging in that many times you can’t just use a cost per square foot rule as you can on a new build. Getting the conceptual design on paper and then getting some initial and early cost estimates can really aid in making decisions before you move forward with engineered drawings and construction documents.

Half of your construction budget is generally composed of the bones or sticks and bricks and the other half are the finishes and goodies of the project. It’s the goodies where most clients blow their budget so it is important to get this initial estimate broken out so you know what comprises your budget. Then use this initial estimate to fine tune your “goodies” budget so you and / or you and your designer can select “goodies” that match your budget.

Of course there are SO many homes that have been built in the 70’s and 80’s here is Phoenix/Scottsdale that simply need to be freshened up. On February 15th from 12:30 to 2:30 PM LUXE magazine will feature an event where I will be on a panel along with Interior Designer, Anita Lange and Architect and fellow ARA member, Dale Gardon whereat we will discuss ways to freshen up Old World Custom Homes. Let’s just say, there are a lot of them out there and it seems the color of choice was “brown”! We have been busy de-browning a lot of houses in the last ten years and many times that is all it takes to give an existing house a simple makeover. Check out this episode of our show SKETCH where that was all we basically did to a home we had designed ten years ago. What a difference! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/modernizing-old-world-luxury-homes-tickets-31713654394

https://www.thedesignnetwork.com/episodes/sketch-reimagined-spaces/

From the brown trim – casings, crown moulding and baseboards, to the brown doors and brown millwork – lightening these elements up can make all the difference in the world.

Working with our team and a good interior designer and a landscape architect can make all the difference in the world in freshening up a dark Old World, Southwest or Tuscan Style Home. The difference is dramatic. We are happy to come out at no charge and give you a consultation to get your project going! I wonder in ten years if we will be “de-graying” homes????

Let's Remodel!

2017 - Here we Go!

Happy New Year. I’m still having trouble getting used to writing or accepting 2017 but time marches on as we all know.

We are all back from our travels and back to work on some amazing projects. A lot of new work is in the pipeline and many projects are about to break ground and we have a bunch currently under construction! We have a ton of remodel and makeover projects going which we love!!! We see this market only growing in the future and we are very excited to be a part of it.

We are busy adapting and employing new technology to both design, present and experience our designs and we are currently working on a Candelaria Design Dream Home that we will share in the virtual reality world each month as it is designed so that everyone can experience and in essence live in a Candelaria Design home. With no limitations, we expect to have a lot of fun with this and at the same time show our untethered abilities. As the home takes shape our viewers will be able to send comments and ideas so the project will in essence evolve over time.

Our Candelaria Design crew is always involved in community service and giving back and we are currently in full swing for our Gigi’s Playhouse University and Café project and the Colten Foundation Bat Cave. Two projects that we are so proud to be a part of and we encourage all of you in the design and build community and of course our clients and vendors to get involved in.

Last week we announced the kick off for the construction of Gigi’s Playhouse University and Café. https://gigisplayhouse.org/phoenix/ Candelaria Design along with Earth and Images donated our services for Phase 1 of the Playhouse a couple years ago and the project has had such success that now we have just completed design on Phase 2 and are in the process of raising money and donations of materials and services for its construction.

Then there is the Colten Foundation Bat Cave!!! https://coltencowellfoundation.org This 35,000 square foot cave is getting ready to kick off under the construction expertise of LGE Design Build. We have a number of fun events planned to raise funds including an auctioned off home cooked dinner for 20 at Casa Candelaria where Isabel and I will cook a gourmet meal paired with wine. This will be a blast and all of the proceeds will go to Colten Bat Cave.  I look forward to getting more people involved in this project – email me for more details.

Finally, we have a couple amazing Candelaria Design Tours set for 2017. In June we will embark on our first Candelaria Design Tour Spain and we are happy to say that that trip is SOLD OUT. http://www.candelariadesign.com/tours  We will start the tour in San Sebastian Spain and include a day the San Sebastian Cooking School. From there we will head south to the Rioja/Basque Wine Region and enjoy four days in LaGuardia, Spain. The trip will finish up in the magical city of Barcelona where we will enjoy the work of Gaudi and the cuisine of Catalan. We are now taking reservations for our 2018 Candelaria Design Tour Spain which will in essence be this same trip so make your reservation now to join us in 2018.

In September 2017 we will embark on our 15th Candelaria Design Tour Italy! We do have a couple spots open for this trip if interested. We depart on September 20th where we will fly to Florence, Italy. We will enjoy three days in Florence and then will take our convoy down to our Umbria farmhouse compound where we will enjoy a week in the countryside of Umbria and Tuscany. From there we will drive to Venice, Italy where we will enjoy three days in this magical city. If interested – don’t hesitate to contact us as this trip will fill quickly. We are offering reservations now for our 2018 trip which will finish in Treviso where we will tour a number of Palladio Villas. This tour will depart on September 26th 2018 so get on the list for this spectacular experience.

We are considering adding a Candelaria Design Tour Santa Fe this August. This will be a short 5 day tour featuring the art, cuisine, and spas of Santa Fe, New Mexico which is a very special place for my wife Isabel and I. She was born in nearby Espanola and my ancestors settled the area in the late 1600’s. We are looking forward to sharing this experience to a handful of travelers over an extended weekend. Email me if interested.

Next, I am a board member of the Arizona Chapter of Habitat for Humanity http://habitatcaz.org and we have some fantastic events coming up this spring including a big fund raiser we will hold at the Candelaria Design Village at Mountain Shadows http://cullumhomes.com/projects/the-village-at-mountain-shadows  This will be a fun event where I will be cooking for the entire venue with our Mark Candelaria Collection Pasta Maker. By the way you can purchase your machine complete with recipes on our website. You will love it. http://www.candelariadesign.com/candelaria-products/candelaria-premiere-collection-gourmet-pasta-maker

On Monday, March 6th I will be proudly singing the National Anthem for the third time at the San Francisco Giants ~ Cleveland Indians spring training game at Scottsdale Stadium. I am very excited to be doing this again and I look forward to the opportunity to sing in front of my fellow Scottsdale Charros. Email me for tickets – I know the game will be great and the singing will be fun! http://charros.com/spring-training-baseball/

Ok so that fills in my free time. Meanwhile, we are busy with our projects and clients with homes on the board on the far east coast of Long Island to projects on the Oregon and California Coasts and projects underway in Kansas City, and a beautiful home on the boards in Cherry Hills, Colorado. That’s just to mention a few – not to mention the wonderful projects we currently have underway right here in Arizona from Scottsdale, to Flagstaff down to Yuma, AZ. All exciting!

We look forward to a great 2017! Thanks for reading and participating on our blog. We will continue to share our designs, travels and of course recipes for Inspiring Living the Candelaria Design way!

Welcome to Spain - where it all started for the Candelarias.

Casa Batllo - Barcelona

Casa Batllo - Barcelona

Yesterday my family and I, just missing Tiffany this time, landed in Barcelona España. We are here to finalize details on our new addition to our Candelaria Design Tours – Spain! We will still be doing our Italy Tour with our 15th tour set for this coming September finishing in Venice. But we thought it was time to branch out and so now we will be offering Spain. Our June 2017 trip is SOLD OUT. So do not hesitate to get your spot reserved for the 2018 trip most likely set for June also.

Ok so why Spain???? Well it turns out that the Candelaria family originated nearly 400 years ago from Spain when one of my ancestors left Oviedo, Spain for Mexico and then his ancestors eventually made their way to the Albuquerque area of New Mexico and was one of the first or a handful of families who initially settled there in the early 1700’s. So Spain means a lot to me! We will be fortunate to spend some time this coming weekend in Oviedo and so my girls will see one side of where they originated from.

Casa Batllo - Barcelona

Spain is also significant to me in this is the country where I caught the travel bug. You see in 1990 my good friend and high school classmate, Laurie Clauson, insisted I come with her to visit the family and friends from her times as an exchange student here. I was in the recovery mode from marriage number one and was really searching for what my life was about. I was 30 years old.

Laurie, convinced me to join her and she showed me Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, Oviedo (which at the time I had no idea my ancestors originated from there) and my favorite, the little fishing village of Luanco on the far north coast of Spain and the home of Laurie’s friends and adopted family. That trip changed my life for many reasons. I discovered this most magnificent country, I connected with my ancestry in a way I would later more fully understand, I realized there was a whole world out there to explore, it opened my eyes to the endless opportunities in design and architecture, it awakened my passion for cooking and food. Well that pretty much sums me up now some 27 years later. It’s interesting that that trip really marked the moment I awoke….I feel I am at another awakening now as I close in on my 60’s and move into a new stage of my life.

I have returned to Spain on a number of occasions since that first trip and my love for Spain continues to grow. I realize now though I have not been here since 2004 – way to long…..! I am so happy to be back, and I am typing this blog from the 25th floor of the Hotel Arts overlooking the entire city of Barcelona. Spectacular.

I remember my first trip to Barcelona all by myself. Really my first trip abroad without anyone but me…..a very intimidating but also very freeing experience as it gave me the confidence that I could really do anything and that there is nothing that makes you feel more alive than stepping completely out of your comfort zone. An experience that ever since has served me well with many aspects of my life.

I recall walking the streets of Barcelona, and taking in the sights all alone, with no one to reflect or discuss my observations and discoveries. I remember thinking to myself, “how wonderful it would be to be here with someone I love and explore it that way!” Well some 27 years later here I am, with the love of my life, my Isabel, and two of my three girls, Isabella and Sophia. I cannot tell you how excited I am and how special this trip is for me and my life.

Life is interesting how it all plays out. I have learned that you just need to keep going and make the most of each day. This is it – this could be the last day. I have been on that edge a few times in life and these near ends have reminded me that this is it – there is not TEVO in life – no replays. Thanks for reading my blog and being a part of my life. I know if you are reading this you must be someone special to me. Enjoy our journey……

I am so blessed in so many ways. A wonderful wife, family, friends, clients and of course my Candelaria Design Team! My crew works so hard and this year I am pretty sure we hit an all-time record for the amount of hours we worked. But we have a lot to show for it – beautiful projects on the boards, under construction and now completed. We have many clients spending their first Christmas in their Candelaria Design home. I can only imagine what that would be like….

I live a pretty modest life in some ways and obviously a pretty big life in other ways. Isabel and I rent our 2700 sf patio home….no we do not live in a mega mansion. I drive my 4 year old Prius…. nota Tesla …..although I would like one. Some guys spend their spare time on the golf course - I love to travel. I love to cook and entertain and get involved in causes that give back to those that are less fortunate…..Gigi’s Playhouse, the Colten Bat Cave, Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent DePaul, St. Mary’s Food Bank are just a few of the many we play very active and direct roles in.

I love my work. Creating homes and the place people live is so challenging yet very rewarding. The clients and people I have met and have had the honor to work for is beyond my wildest dreams. It is my life, my passion, my soul. I am so excited about the projects we are currently involved with and really our best work is still to come. Truly, my reward comes from the thank you’s and wonderful appreciation we receive from our clients – especially those now living in their Candelaria Design homes. I hope the environments we have created have changed the way our client’s go through life and experience every day.

I love my team. They all care and give so much effort. I cannot tell you how many times I go in at 4 or 5 am and someone is already there working away. They are motivated by the same thing – just knowing a client loves their work is music to their ears. Architects are not a lot different than a stage actor on Broadway. We live for the applause. It’s our biggest motivator. Unfortunately, there is not an audience to give you an ovation at the completion of every drawing, rendering, or field report so it only shows how much these people truly love and care. The talents of my team are amazing and I love taping into it and watch it blossom and flourish.

I love my clients. Wow you are all amazing and inspiring. I have learned so much just being around you and soaking up your knowledge, style, drive, and passion for life. It all fuels me and pushes me to take our designs and projects further. I wish I could spend time with them more – away from architecture….just to learn. I love seeing my clients in their homes and watching the creation that has lived in my head sometimes for years finally come to life.

I love my wife and family. None of this matters without the love of my wife and family. My sweet Isabel has made the biggest impact on my life than anything that has ever happened to me. Her love has allowed my creativity and energy to blossom and hopefully I have had the same impact and effect on her life. I love my time, although it’s never very much, with Isabel and my girls. Our travels are the best. Monday we leave for Spain for a 12 day trip to preview and fine tune our Candelaria Design Tour Italy for June 2017. We look forward to fun adventures, great food, wine, and some well- earned rest.

Happy Holidays - Thanksgiving Escape to Napa

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Holiday season! We are enjoying the winter temps and all of the parties, functions, and holiday get togethers.

Meanwhile in the midst of the holiday fun we are busy working away on our projects – ranging from a beach home renovation on the far end of Long Island, NY to a beach home renovation in LaJolla, CA with a number of amazing projects in between – of course most right here in Arizona.

Proud to see all three of the spec homes we recently designed in Arcadia and one in Silverleaf all sell in 2016! We now have several new specs in design!

I appreciate all who came to my photography show at Isabel’s store Earth and Images. We had a great turn out and sold several of our Candelaria Collection Pasta Machines and several of my photo pieces – thank you!!!

It is definitely a busy time of the year and business wise it has been really getting busier as the year is coming to an end. Usually the slowest time, I am optimistic with what we might see in 2017. So to gear up and get a little down time in the midst of my 70 hour work weeks, Isabel and I snuck off to Napa to enjoy a long Thanksgiving weekend.

I know many of you have been to Napa – our USA version of Italy just a two hour flight away – we love it. This time we flew into San Francisco and met with our friends and Italy travelers, Gicela and Anthony Dulcich, who drove up from Long Beach and met us at our San Fran rendezvous spot, The St. Francis Hotel on Union Square. I love the St. Francis Hotel and it is definitely my go to spot when I come to the city by the bay!

We scheduled only one evening in the city so we had to make sure we squeezed in a dinner at the Tadich Grill, supposedly the oldest restaurant in San Francisco and California. http://www.tadichgrill.com/location-sf.php. Always fabulous, the cioppino is a must.

The next morning we squeezed in our morning walk comprised of coffee and some photography. Then we were off for Napa. This time we kept it simple and charming and checked into the Cottages of Napa Valley http://www.napacottages.com at the recommendation of our good friend, designer, and fellow Italy traveler, Rebecca Curtis – great recommendation. Charming, simple, unpretentious and best of all – quiet! We loved it and highly recommend.

We checked in and we were off to Michael Chiarello’s, Bottega, in Yountville for a fantastic late lunch. Michael Chiarello is one of my favorite chefs and have loved his show and recipes on the Food Network for years.

http://michaelchiarello.com www.botteganapavalley.com  The food was outstanding but what stood out for me what the whiskey sour the bartender made with raw egg whites in a shaker…..unreal. Fantastic atmosphere and the food was 5 stars. http://michaelchiarello.com Not a bad way to start our Napa experience. After our fabulous lunch it was time to do a little shopping, grab an espresso, a little more shopping then back to the hotel to relax. The rain moved in and after a nice nap we were off to Sonoma to The Depot for a quiet dinner. http://www.depotsonoma.com/dining/

The next morning was Sunday morning and so we started the day with a lovely Thomas Keller, Bouchon Bakery https://www.thomaskeller.com/bouchonbakeryyountville basket at our doorstep, the newspaper, hot coffee brewing, a crackling fire and some George Winston playing on our Beats Pill we always bring when we travel.

After a leisurely and relaxing start to the day we made our way out into the sunshine and a visit to the Dean and Deluca store on our way to St. Helena, CA. http://www.deandeluca.com/sth-ca I always love these stores and just browsing and exploring. From there our shopping continued in the charming town of St. Helena. Loved this place with wonderful stores and the Orin Swift Tasting Room smack dab in the middle of town. Nothing like starting the day with a little wine tasting of the Orin Swift collection. http://www.orinswift.com

After a nice light lunch we went exploring with a stop at the Castello di Amorosa Winery just north of St. Helena. This winery is over the top in terms of the authentic 13th century Tuscan architecture.  It is spot on and if I woke up from a sleep I would swear I was in Tuscany on one of our Candelaria Tour Italy journeys.   http://www.castellodiamorosa.com

From there we went further up the valley and to the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. https://www.francisfordcoppolawinery.com. Another amazing winery to explore and then add all of the movie memorabilia from his films – especially the Godfather films – , the grounds and gardens and not to mention the wines and you can easily spend some time here.

So after an afternoon of enjoying wine it was time to top it off with a fabulous dinner at Bouchon. https://www.thomaskeller.com/bouchonyountville Be prepared to take your time and bring adequate funds. It was fantastic – both service and cuisine.  What an amazing sensory stimulating day – my favorite – from architecture, to beautiful scenery, to fabulous wines to savory cuisine.

The next morning we had our day teed up by my good friend and the uber-talented, Landscape Designer, Jeff Berghoff, who does the landscape design on most of my homes. http://www.berghoffdesign.com Jeff is currently working on the design for two wineries in Napa and he was so kind to set us up with private tastings at the Caymus Winery http://www.caymus.com  and the V.Sattui Winery https://www.vsattui.com both near St. Helena. Wow – knowing Jeff’s style I knew this would be off the charts and it lived up to my anticipation. From our two hour tasting at Caymus to our tasting followed by a lovely picnic on the terrace with V.Sattui President, Tom C. Davies. How gracious to spend time talking with us about our trips to Italy, wine, and the current state of the wine industry. All very fascinating and how wonderful to meet and make new friends in Napa.

We finished our evening back in Sonoma with a stop at the original William & Sonoma store and home of founder Chuck Williams – all right there, in of course, Sonoma! http://www.williams-sonoma.com/customer-service/original-sonoma-store.html Very cool and equally inspiring. You just have to go for it!

Well – our time in Napa was done and it was time to get back to the drawing board but now filled with some wonderful dinners, fantastic wine, some romance, rest, and of course many fun memories. Across the Golden Gate Bridge and back to San Fran – but of course not with a stop at one of Gicela and Anthony’s favorites and now mine the authentic Italian deli of Lucca for Christmas raviolis!  http://www.luccadeli.com

I wish you all an amazing Holiday season! Get out and enjoy some great food, wine and of course architecture!
