Tapping your Soul with Abstract Artist Cody Hooper

CodyinStudio.jpg

Today’s podcast episode we talk with Abstract Artist out of Austin, Texas, Cody Hooper. He describes his process for helping clients find that special piece or pieces and how he approaches outfitting a home with his work, matching the feelings that a client wants in their home. We also dive deep, discussing how after loosing his father and grandmother to a murder-suicide he conquered depression, anxiety and broke the confines of medications to function through painting. This is apparent in his work and the play of light and dark in his art, as he says “needing one to illuminate the other. Art is therapy.” Being true to himself and allowing his audience to see through his paintings and creations is very important to him.

Hooper studied under Southwest watercolor artist Barbara Hughes for several years, establishing his foundation as an artist and led him to focus primarily on realistic watercolors in the beginning. When he began experimenting with abstracts in various mediums, he enjoyed the freedom and personal expression and it was then he really began to flourish. He is deeply interested in the effects of color, texture and the emotional response to strong composition and design. Removing the representational and creating something that told a story without observational subject matter excited Cody.

Today, his work is a bold mix of styles, ranging from sleek and contemporary to weathered and organic. He brings a subtle and sophisticated feel to his paintings through a unique balance of color, composition and texture. His work is exhibited in prestigious galleries and featured in private and public collections worldwide.

Although Cody doesn’t live in Arizona, it holds a special place and like a magnet, it keeps pulling him back. In 2018 he did a large installation for Bob and Renee Parson's PXG private golf course in Scottsdale (pictured below) and has pieces featured in the Andre Kohn Fine Art Gallery in Old Town Scottsdale.

Then we go to London, England and check in with my friend Flavio Casagrande, who is an Italian window rep for Ital windows and is in lockdown in London while he waits to return to Italy and/or the US. He shares his insights on what he sees both in London and hears from Italy.

Finally, we will touch base with another great friend from over 20 years, Gabriele Belli, from Porte del Passato in Central Italy. We have worked with Gabriele for many years including recently on a fabulous home in Desert Mountain built by Manship Builders.

Building a Monument to Compassion with Charles Keller

Sketch of The Colten Cowell Bat Cave

Sketch of The Colten Cowell Bat Cave

Today's episode is about goodness, kindness, charity, and compassion, as my guest today is a person who genuinely epitomizes all of these traits and does so in an energetic yet graceful manner. This person is Charles Keller, Founder of the Colten Cowell Foundation and the Monument to Compassion. The Colten Cowell Foundation is a non-profit that gives children with a disability or a terminal condition, and their families, one-of-a-kind experiences that are both a lot of fun and deeply meaningful.

We designed the Superhero Experience to benefit the entire family. For the children, they get to forget that they are sick and simply enjoy being a kid. For the parents, this is an evening to momentarily let go of their worries and share a moment of pure joy with their children. By watching the Batmobile inspire wonder and joy Charles knew it was more than just a great set of wheels. Charles could see that sharing the Batmobile was a great experience not just for others, but for himself too. The Batmobile is now at the heart of a one-of-a-kind experience that transforms children into Superheroes, creating unforgettable memories for families.

After an imaginative, unforgettable “Crime Fighting Cave” experience, kids become real-life Super Heroes when they are empowered to give. In the process, they learn how rewarding it can be to help others — regardless of the amount. In the end, memories are all we have, and the best are the ones that we get to share with the people that we love.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Charles moved to the Valley to attend Arizona State University. Before becoming Arizona’s most outside-of-the-box philanthropist, Charles worked in government (President George HW Bush administration), Finance (Charles Schwab) and Technology (Apple, Inc.).

All of these assignments are, of course, cakewalks when compared to working for Mr. Wayne at the Bat Cave - a taskmaster if ever there was one.

Pooja Babbrah (002).jpg
PoojaPhoto.jpg

Today’s guest is Pooja Babbrah, a strategy and Senior policy consultant in the healthcare industry and Point-of-Care Partners’ Practice Lead for PBM Services and a co-chair of NCPDP’s Specialty Pharmacy Work Group. Her focus is on healthcare technology and the importance of using technology to help those involved in a patient’s care including doctors, nurses, other clinical and administrative staff and the patients themselves.

Pooja will shed some light on how COVID-19 has impacted her work and her efforts to ensure healthcare information is shared quickly, accurately and securely. We'll also discuss how technology is changing the way we receive health care and how those in the field are adapting and benefiting from all the new innovations.

Throughout her career, Pooja’s efforts have been instrumental in bringing relevant and critical information to doctors in an electronic format.  It wasn’t until she was well into her career when she realized the work she was doing was having such a positive impact on patients and their families and since then, she’s made it her mission to focus her efforts on work that will help patients. In that regard, last year she testified in front of Congress to advocate for the ability for consumers to easily compare medication prices at multiple pharmacies to find the lowest price for their prescriptions. She has also recently been appointed to the Board of Trustees for a national healthcare standards organization which is focused on ways to ensure that healthcare information is shared quickly, accurately and securely to help improve patient outcomes. She also launched the health care industry’s first certified ePrescribing platform for controlled substances, DrFirst’s EPCS Gold 2.0 and was also involved with the development and launch of the company’s HIPAA and DIRECT compliant secure clinical messaging platform.

Riding the Cycle with Rafterhouse's Austin King

Rafterhouse-AKing.jpg
RafterHouse.jpg

Having accomplished his dream as a professional cyclist in his early 20’s, he had to make “the toughest and easiest decision of my life to stop cycling” and stay in one place long enough to start a a new career and life with his girlfriend who lived in Tucson, AZ. Just before his final race in 2007, Austin obtained his real estate license, proposed to his girlfriend, now wife of 10 years, and began a new chapter in his life. Spending the first few years learning the ropes of real estate in an incredibly challenging market, it was the determination, grit, and work ethic learned from his cycling days that helped him succeed.

Utilizing his real estate knowledge along and an entrepreneurial desire to improve residential property, Austin began flipping houses with some friends. What started as a casual venture soon grew into the creation of Rafterhouse in 2013, which has progressed from small ‘fix and flip’ cosmetic projects to large scale multi-million dollar new construction custom home builds. Receiving local, State, and National recognition, including two pilot television episodes with HGTV, Rafterhouse is considered a leader in Phoenix’s custom home building and interior design community. Rafterhouse and most of their projects are located in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, and in addition to the links below, Austin says the best way to find him is to drop on by!

Living Your Mission with Darcy Olsen of Generation Justice

Olsen19071.JPG

Today we speak with one of the strongest, most caring people we know, Founder of Generation Justice, Darcy Olsen. In 2011, Darcy found herself with a foster baby in her arms and a mission: to put an end to the bureaucratic failures, violence, and deaths she’d seen children suffer in our nation’s broken child protection system. Today, Darcy has adopted all four of her children from foster care, pictured below.  Darcy has testified before Congress, written for The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and has published a book "The Right to Try" along with countless appearances on public affair shows.

The story she shares in this episode about her life’s journey and work is heartbreaking and heartwarming . . . but please give it a listen and understand what is happening all around us in this city and cities all over America. We must use our strengths to help others, especially those who cannot help themselves.

Gen Justice works to mend the child protection system and bring a permanent end to innocent children enduring violence in the foster care system. Through bipartisan reforms, they have improved the safety of more than 35,000 kids across the country. Coupled with those reforms, their Children’s Law Clinic provides free counsel for children and creates precedent that serves all child victims.

When Olsen announced the formation of Gen Justice, National Review declared, “Children could have no better guardian angel!” Gen Justice received the Arizona Capitol Times award for “Up and Comer” in 2018 and Olsen herself was named as a “Best Activist” honoree in 2019.

By making a donation to Gen Justice, you receive a dollar-for-dollar credit off of your Arizona taxes, which means you get a credit on your state taxes for the full amount of your donation. Or, get involved!

Bringing the Bling to Living with Scott & Marla Berger

BergerPhoto.jpg

Owner and designer of Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry, Scott Berger and his wife Marla speak about the jewelry business, their creativity and passion for inspiring others. Scott personally consults with every client on each piece of jewelry that Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry produces, from the initial concept to the final result. Based on the chosen stone and the client’s initial concept, Scott creates the design and works with his craftsmen to forge every piece of jewelry entirely in-house from start to finish.

Berger spent 23 years in the wholesale diamond industry and honed his ability to identify the best quality diamonds and precious stones. Part of the reason that Scott made his way into the jewelry business was to educate others – share with them the beauty that he finds in the artistry of a fine cut. Many clients come back to Scott and Addison Taylor specifically because of this special attention.

His keen artistic sensibilities and appreciation for grace and style eventually led Berger to create his first piece of jewelry over 27 years ago, an engagement ring for his wife, Marla. In 2004 Scott and Marla Berger opened the business, Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry and have four children together, one of whom they named the business after.

Building the Ultimate Dream Home with Habitat for Humanity

Mark Candelaria with the future Habitat for Humanity Homeowner

Mark Candelaria with the future Habitat for Humanity Homeowner

In this episode of Inspiring Living we visit a home, one of thirty being built by Habitat for Humanity AZ, just south of downtown Phoenix by the Central Arizona Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. There are so many ways to get involved with this organization and all of the wonderful ways they make an impact on so many lives by building homes.

We interviewed and visited with Central Arizona Chapter President and CEO Jason Barlow as he described the inner workings and passion behind the people who make these homes possible! We then visited with several of the house leaders on site that morning including Carl Westlund, David Humphries, and John Fischer, all of whom are volunteers that were on site that morning, contributing and making a difference.

Probably the best moment of this podcast was chatting with the future homeowner, Abdul Hissou, who was on-site putting the roof shingles on his new home. You can hear the excitement and pride in his voice as he talks about this experience.

We encourage you to get involved and come help us make a difference!
