THE 6 MOST “ICONIC ARCHITECTS” IN ARIZONA

Candelaria Design Team 2024

Among these luminaries is local architect 2. Bennie Gonzalez, acclaimed for his contributions to Scottsdale’s municipal buildings, countless private residences, and structures across the state. Gonzalez’s distinctive Southwestern architectural style has had a profound influence, with imitations widespread. His work in southern Arizona, notably in Nogales, bears testimony to his creative prowess. As a Nogales native, I am well-acquainted with his artistic touch in the town.

Today, the architectural masterpieces of 3. Mark Candelaria and 4. Bing Hu are highly sought-after commodities, commanding top dollar. These homes are prominently displayed in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. While their designs may be opulent and extravagant, the investment is undoubtedly worthwhile.

Arcadia Parisian VIP Home

This recently completed custom residence was designed for a large, blended family in the heart of Arcadia, AZ was the VIP home on Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine’s annual Home Tour. Indoor/outdoor living is celebrated through pocketing glass walls, side-by-side fireplaces and meticulously manicured English garden spaces with layered greens, flowers and a fountain.

Luxe Video Interview on Fitzgerald's French Estate

Luxe Magazine interviews principals Mark Candelaria & Meredith Thomson about this incredible French Manor estate we designed for former AZ Cardinal Larry Fitzgerald.

“Mark takes an artist’s approach to his profession. He is a sculptor who converts visions and ideas onto a set of drawings that evolve into a three-dimensional structure—a home. He performs his craft with intuition and precision, while emphasizing the principles of classical form and functionality.” - Larry Fitzgerald

Good Things Come in Small Packages

Top landscape designer Jeff Berghoff and architect Mark Candelaria craft a Modernist jewel box home on a tight lot in Phoenix. “On a leafy street in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, a rustic wood door serves as a portal to a secret world—an airy, minimalist, light-filled house that embraces a carefully plotted landscape, shaded by sycamore trees and given structure through cactus and agaves.” …

PV Estate, with first-of-its-kind car-bar technology, sells for $5.15 million

As the luxury market continues to be in high demand in Arizona, The Grigg’s Group sold a Paradise Valley listing for $5.15 million. The 6,306-square-foot estate, built by Cullum Homes and located in the Village at Mountain Shadows community, was the first home of its kind to bring a cutting-edge car-bar technology to the state and features five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a theater, wine cellar and many more luxury amenities.

“The car elevator, which takes each vehicle into the showroom, was a major selling point for this home,” said agent Scott Grigg of The Grigg’s Group at Realty Executives.

“This was the first-ever home of its kind to feature such a technology and it has set the standard for a lot of new luxury builds coming to the area.”

Secret Life of an Architect

Paradise Valley City Lifestyle magazine’s March issue features a 4-page article showcasing renowned architect Mark Candelaria’s other talent - cooking. It highlights all of the client dinners he has hosted in his home, his office’s showroom kitchen, and of course in the client’s completed kitchens he’s designed. Many of his clients choose special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries for Mark’s special meal as it really is memorable. In fact, it’s gotten to the point where dinners hosted by Mark now raise thousands of dollars at fundraising events!! Mark says, “It’s a great way to build and create great relationships.” He also loves it because unlike architecture where it takes years to complete a home, “I can cook a dinner in two to three hours and get the same feeling of satisfaction.”

Luxe Cover Feature January 2023

Starting the year off strong with one of our homes on the cover of Luxe Magazine! This cover article features an interior refresh of a Spanish Colonial style home Mark Candelaria designed back in 2005 in PV!

“There’s so much soul in Mark’s architecture, and we wanted to keep that: plasterwork; the richness of the Saltillo tiles, wood and iron details; the brick staircase; the arches," said designer Lauren Wallace. While there weren’t many structural changes needed, the team “updated the lighting, countertops, wall tile and paint, and cleaned up some of the more ornate detailing throughout the residence,” general contractor Frank DiMaggio notes.

An English-Country Style Estate is Reborn

Growing up in Central Phoenix, this home had always caught the eye of future homeowner Alex Stark. Years later, she married builder Rick Stark of Starion Custom Residences and they purchased this historical home from 1947. While a lot of work was needed, they wanted to keep as many original materials and details as possible. So the Starks together with Architect Meredith Thomson reconfigured the floor plan, raised the ceilings, added a pool, a covered patio and a detached garage to transform this historic cottage into a fabulous family home for generations to come!
